But we all know these things never stop at words. There is always some item involved too, something borrowed and never returned, treated like giving it back is an inconvenience. Because nothing says "I respect you" like making someone chase down their own belongings.
So naturally, the generous one hits their limit. The subscriptions get canceled. The gifts stop. The free favors disappear. And this is the part that always gets people, some other family member swoops in and says they are overreacting. As if boundaries are the real crime here, not months of being taken for granted.
Here's the thing, though. Being kind does not mean being unlimited. You can help people without becoming their unpaid staff. And if someone repays your effort with attitude, pulling back is not petty, it is basic self-respect.
Being called lazy while doing everything might be the most iconic form of disrespect there is.
